Lurani Trophy – Formula Junior

The Formula Junior: a junior class with legendary status

Historical motorsport at its highest level: The Lurani Trophy brings the Formula Junior icons of the 50s and 60s back to the race track – living history in motion.

The Formula Junior was the key to a great motorsport career at the end of the 1950s – a springboard to Formula 1. A generation of drivers stepped forward with technically simple but cleverly designed racing cars that would later become world champions: Jim Clark, Jochen Rindt or John Surtees – all of them drove Formula Junior at one time. The racing series was launched in 1958 by the Italian Count Giovanni "Johnny" Lurani and was present on five continents within a few years. Today, this spirit lives on in the FIA Lurani Trophy for historic Formula Junior cars.

FIA Lurani Trophy at the Nürburgring Classic

From June 11 to 13, 2027, the Lurani Trophy will once again be on display at the Nürburgring – as part of the prestigious Nürburgring Classic. Embedded in the spectacular weekend of events, original Formula Junior cars from 1958 to 1963 will take to the track, with participants from all over Europe and beyond. The series is recognized as an official FIA championship and is one of the most popular international racing classes in historic motorsport. The vehicles are as diverse as the era itself: from the front-engine chassis to the revolutionary monocoque with a mid-engine layout.

Two races on the Grand Prix track

Equally exciting for drivers and spectators: The Lurani Trophy includes a qualifying and two race stages at the Nürburgring Classic. Racing takes place on the challenging Grand Prix track – a terrain that is perfectly suited to the delicate, lightweight monoplaces of Formula Junior. The races are not only a look back at the technical development of this era, but still provide thrilling motorsport today with close-fought duels and a variety of international drivers.
